Omnibiz is digitizing FMCG retail distribution in Africa with support from OnePipe

The Situation

In the wake of the pandemic of 2020, a lot of retailers could no longer move around easily to obtain supplies for their neighbourhood stores, significantly impacting their livelihood and also creating a dent in sales numbers for the distributors that service them. Omnibiz was setup to not only tackle this particular challenge, but also tackle the problem of digitizing the distribution chain of partner FMCG brands. Retailers are able to digitally request inventory directly from the warehouse and have it shipped to them.  But this created yet another problem. A lot of the retailers preffered to pay in cash or direct bank transfers to the distributors. This created a significant reconciliation nightmare for the distributors and manufacturers in the back office, often leading to leakages and other inefficiencies. Omnibiz required a solution to this new situation.

The OnePipe Solution

With virtual account APIs published by partner banks on the OnePipe platform, Omnibiz was able to issue accounts to retailers and drivers, as a way to resolve the reconciliation issues without significantly changing retailer behaviour.
  • All retailers and drivers had unique virtual accounts assigned to them
  • Retailers paid in cash to the driver
  • Drivers deposited the cash into the special accounts at the nearest agent or bank branch along their routes
  • API integrations made it possible to resolve the orders attached to the payment and auto-reconcile
This significantly cut out the risks of long distance cash handling and the back office operations of spending hours on reconciliation daily. As a further offering, Omnibiz is now empowering retailers to upgrade the same accounts to fully functional status and offering incentives that drive more cashless behaviour including:
  1. Lowest cost funds transfers
  2. Airtime purchases at a discount
  3. Credit lines linked to the account activity
The partnership between Omnibiz, OnePipe and the supporting banks has made it possible to deepen financial inclusion and cashless behaviour in the retail distribution value chain.
